Joan O. Murphy

February 21, 1933 ~ August 12, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Joan O. Murphy (Engelhard) entered into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at the age of 84.  She was born in Spokane, WA to Isabel L. and Andrew B. Engelhard on February 21, 1933, the third of four children.

Joan was a 1950 graduate of Marycliff High School and attended Gonzaga University.  She worked for Potlatch Lumber, Standard Oil, and The Crescent department store.  Joan also graduated from the Felt and Tarrant Comptometer School in 1951.

Joan married Patrick J. Murphy on May 28, 1955 a marriage that lasted  until his death 43 years later.  Joan and Patrick built a home in North Spokane where they raised their family.  She was a life long member of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church.  Some of her favorite hobbies included; sewing, crocheting, shopping, cooking, gardening, vacationing, caring for her grandchildren and reading.  She also made the best potato salad and chocolate chip cookies.

She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family, and will be sorely missed.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick in 1997; mother and father; brothers, Howard A and Larry A (Mary Alice) Engelhard; sister Pearl E. and her husband Robert D. Crommelin.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Colleen (Mark) Davis; son, Shawn (Carmen) Murphy; four grandchildren, Jessica (Nathan) Thomas, Samantha Davis, Ellie and Declan Murphy; two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Liam Thomas; sister-in-law, Mary Alice Englehard of Crestwood MO; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A time for final visitation  will be held at Hennessey Funeral Home and Crematory on Thursday August 17, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 7:00PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday August 18 at 10:00 Am at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church located at 515 W St. Thomas Moore Way, Spokane.  A private interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.  To leave a note for the family please visit hennessyfuneralhomes.com
