Tribute

Michael Funaro, a beacon of positivity and kindness, was born October 3, 1982, in Spokane, Washington. Passed away at the age of 41 after a life filled with challenges, love, and an unwavering spirit of generosity. Despite facing numerous health challenges, Michael’s optimistic outlook and caring nature remained steadfast, touching the lives of all who knew him.

Michael is preceded in death by his mom, Giovanna Funaro, Nonna (Carmella) & Grandpa (Armondo) Defazio, Nonna (Amelia) & Nonno (Gennaro) Funaro. Survived by his dad, Giuseppe Funaro, brother, three sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Michael’s enthusiasm for Washington State University football, the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Sounders, Spokane Chiefs hockey, Gonzaga basketball and Italian soccer knew no bounds. He was the heart and soul of the family’s NCAA bracket challenge and NFL fantasy football league, bringing joy and a competitive spirit that will be deeply missed.

Michael’s nieces and nephews were the light of his life. Always on the sidelines cheering them on and planning ahead for when they were on break. Bonfires, chickens, sports games, poker, Xbox, Seattle, and much more. Uncle Mike cherished every moment spent with them, and his tradition of sending a solid chocolate bunny every Easter became a cherished symbol of his affection.

Michael’s love extended beyond his human family to his pets. His dog, Cocoa, was not just a pet but a beloved companion, and his playful cats, chirping birds, and colorful fish brought him joy and laughter.

He loved decorating for every holiday, enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, going on drives, cooking & baking, family get togethers, afternoon naps, and sending surprise gifts to his sisters. He was the best at not forgetting special occasions.

Known for his selflessness, Michael was always ready to lend a helping hand to his neighbors. Whether it was a simple act of kindness or going out of his way to assist others, Michael’s generosity knew no limits. His ability to care deeply for those around him made him a cherished friend.

As we say goodbye to Michael, we also celebrate the remarkable life he led. His legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to charities that reflect Michael’s compassionate spirit, particularly those related to animal welfare or sports programs for children.

A memorial service to honor and remember Michael’s life, providing an opportunity for friends and family to gather in tribute to a man whose life exemplified strength, love, and selflessness will be celebrated Saturday March 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 219 E Rockwood Blvd. Entombment will follow at noon at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 N Wall.

Michael Funaro’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his spirit and the memories he created will forever remain a guiding light in their lives. Rest in peace, Michael. Your legacy will live on in the countless lives you touched with your warmth, generosity, and unwavering positive attitude.
