Patrick Francis Owens

November 19, 1925 – September 3, 2017

Patrick Francis Owens, exceptional husband, father and grandfather passed away September 3, 2017 at the age of 91 in Kirkland, WA under the care of Evergreen Hospice after a long term struggle with Alzheimer’s.  He was born in South Cle Elum, WA on November 19, 1925.

Most importantly, he was a good man.

Pat’s primary focus in life revolved around his family.  He had a passion for golf, fishing and camping.  He was a long time member of both the Indian Canyon and Coeur d’Alene Men’s Clubs where he held several officer positions throughout the years.  He never hit it long, but he kept it in play.  He was always quick to offer a putting lesson.  He began fly-fishing at a very young age in Cle Elum and instilled that passion for fishing and the outdoors to his children and their children.  His grandchildren will remember many family campouts and his incredible pancake breakfasts.

He attended Cle Elum High School and later graduated from O’ Dea High School when he moved in with his sister Dorothy and her family where she raised him as one of her own.  He enlisted in the US Army Air Corp during WW II.  During his stint in the military he was trained as a navigator on the B-29 Superfortress and obtained the rank of Second Lieutenant.

He graduated from Gonzaga University with a degree in Civil Engineering.  Upon graduation he established Pat F. Owens Construction Company.  From the first house he built on South Freya in 1955 his legacy of beautiful homes and businesses in greater Spokane spanned 40 years.

Upon returning from the military, prior to college, he jumped into a rebuilt ’33 Ford with a new set of tires and three of his best friends to tour the United States.  He collected gas and travel expenses for the entire trip from all of them prior to leaving Seattle.  When they rolled back into Sister Dorothy’s Seattle driveway, many months later, he refunded each of his buddies 10 cents for the cost of travel.

His love for animals grew with age till his passing.  He was always a fancier of cats but dogs were his soft spot, particularly Tess.  Tess was a very special companion to him that stayed with him for more than 10 years following the passing of his first wife, Mary Ellen (Mickey) Donahoe Owens. As his illness progressed, pets weren’t a part of his life, but squirrels and birds filled the void.

He married his first wife Mickey on May 5, 1951.  They lived very happily together for 27 years and raised four children until her passing in November, 1978.  In 1987 he married Lorraine Tilson and moved to Coeur d’Alene, ID where he resided in her golf course home until her passing in 2010.  Shortly thereafter he moved to Boise, ID under the care of his daughter Molly Owens Gregory and became an integral part of her family until his most recent passing in Kirkland.

He is survived by his sister Nellie Pearce, of Vancouver, WA; his two sons and two daughters and their spouses; Kevin & Joan Owens of Red Lodge, MT, Brian and Lora Owens of Clovis, CA, Carrie and Tom Durrett of Selah, WA and Molly and Bob Gregory of Bellevue, WA; grandchildren Christopher, Michael, James, Kyle, Chelsea, Krista, Brianne, Henry, Rosalyn, Hayden, Patrick, Andy, Craig, Lauren, Jack and Joseph; great-grandchildren Colton, Chloe, Savannah, Paige, Colton and Lucas.

A Rosary is scheduled for 6:00 PM, September 10th at St Anthony’s Church in Spokane, WA. Funeral mass to follow at St Anthony’s Monday at 10:00 AM.  Burial to follow at 1:30PM at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that friends honor Pat’s love of animals and the excellent care he received from Evergreen Hospice and make a contribution to either the Spokane Humane Society (www.spokanehumanesociety.org), 6607 N. Havana, Spokane, WA 99217 or Evergreen Hospice (www.evergreenhealth.com/hospice-care) 12822 N. 124th Lane NE, Kirkland, WA 98034 in his name.
