Dorothy Jean (Hoffman) Hood

Born April 16, 1930 to Earl and Gertrude Hoffman in Spokane, WA. She passed away peacefully at her home on June 21, 2018. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jerome L. Hood; Son, David J. Hood, Amarillo, TX; Daughters, Sandra L. and husband Michael Boatright, Kennewick, WA, Karen M. Hood, Reno, NV, Patricia D. and husband Dionisio Morales, Medical Lake, WA, and Angela M. and husband Robert Castro, San Francisco, CA. There are 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings; Rose M. Rae of Spokane, WA, Margret M. Randall, Seahurst, WA, James E. Hoffman, Denver, CO, and Frank T. Hoffman, Bothell, WA. Dorothy graduated from Holy Names Academy in 1948 and Sacred Heart School of Nursing in 1951. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital, and for a doctor, from 1951-1956. She met her husband Jerry while he was stationed at Fairchild AFB, WA, and they married July 28, 1956. From 1956-1979 she and her family moved almost every three years, crossing the US from Arizona to North Dakota, Massachusetts to California with bases in between.  She really enjoyed living overseas while her husband was stationed at Bitburg Air Force Base, Germany from 1974-1977. After he retired in 1979 they returned to Spokane, WA. Throughout all of the moves she kept active in nursing and she retired from the 92nd Medical Group, Fairchild AFB in 1992.    If you knew Dorothy, you would know she was a very kind and giving person.  She was a wonderful wife, dedicated mother and caring nurse.  She always served other before thinking of herself.  She was a fantastic mother to her five children, and a second mom to the dozens of other kids that passed through the house.  She drove for Meals on Wheels for about seven years. She was also a faithful member of St Charles Catholic Church and an active member of the St.  Charles Altar Society. If you look up the the name “Dorothy” it means “Gift of God”. Anyone that knew her would agree. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 27th from noon to 7PM at Hennessey Funeral Home, 2203 N Division, with a rosary following at 7PM. A Funeral Mass will be at St. Charles Catholic Church, 4515 N Alberta at 10 AM with a reception following.  The graveside service will be at 1:30 at St. Joseph Cemetery, 17825 E Trent, Spokane Valley.  Memories and condolences may be posted at this site.
