Tribute

Gary Walter Pierce, (age 72) entered eternal rest on March 1, 2023, in Spokane, WA. Gary was born March 6, 1950, in Ritzville, WA to Walter ‘Lee’ and Helen Pierce. Alongside his brother, Brent, he grew up in Spokane a few blocks from Rogers High School, graduating in 1968. He was a life-long resident of Spokane, except for time spent serving his country in the US Air Force. His experiences while stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi and Anchorage, AK spurred his love for travel.

He returned to Spokane in the fall of 1973 after his discharge, and reconnected with his childhood friend, Monica Pedersen. They spent the summer of 1974 enjoying the World’s Fair and were married on November 22, 1975, forever uniting the Pierce and Pedersen families. Together they built a home in the Spokane Valley and raised twin daughters, Kelly and Coleen. Gary was the consummate supporter, attending nearly every sporting event or performance. He was a great cook and devoted family man. This love spilled over into the very special bond he shared with his grandchildren.

An alumnus of Eastern Washington University, Gary spent the greater part of his professional career working in IT for the City of Spokane.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Helen, and his brother Brent. He is survived by his loving wife, Monica; daughters Kelly Fernandez (Albert) of La Habra, CA; Coleen Spotts (Brian) of Knoxville, TN; Sister-in-law Cyndee Pierce of Boise, ID; nephews Colton Pierce and Trevor Pierce, Boise, ID; four grandchildren, Drew and Alyssa Fernandez, and Addison and Ethan Spotts. Also, numerous cousins from the Pierce and Plager families.

A viewing is scheduled Friday, March 10, 3-5pm at Hennessey Funeral Home, 2203 N Division. Memorial service with military honors will be celebrated Saturday March 11, at 4pm at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3606 S Schafer Rd, Spokane Valley.
