A poem for my beloved friend John and his family and friends:
We didn't ask for this room or this music. We were invited in. Therefore, because the dark surrounds us, let us turn our faces to the light. Let us endure hardship to be grateful for plenty. We have been given pain to be astounded by joy. We have been given life to deny death. We did not ask for this room or this music but because we are here, let us dance. By Stephen King

I am shocked and saddened by John's passing. We met in art school in 1967 and spent many hours together. He was so talented and creative. Our relationship took a whole new avenue when the band I was with lost our bass player. On a hunch, knowing John played guitar, I asked if he played bass. Without hesitation he dove in, learning quickly to transition to bass and became one of the Madd Hatters until the band broke up due to military obligations in 1968. He had the greatest sense of humor and brought us all up to a better level in our lives. I still have the best greeting card on plain lined paper from him ..."to Randy the army guy". We haven't been in touch in recent years and I regret that but one thing is for sure....I'll miss you "Sniffy". RIP

My condolences to all of John's family. John was the most creative graphic artist I ever worked with and knew how to create what people were looking for in graphic design. His great sense of humor and love of life always shone through his work and personality. He was definitely one of a kind and will be missed by the many who knew and worked with him. Rest in peace John

John and I met through mutual friends Doug Crabtree and "Wild Bill" Voiland back in the late '70's. Though we didn't see each other often over the years, we would occasionally bump into each other at Super 1 on 29th. He always called me "Jeffers". He was a great mentor, teacher, and friend who always had time for a good laugh. He always shared an anecdote or gossip about someone we both knew, which was always fun for me. Good by John, I will miss you.

I believe I was the candidate on the last Tenure Track committee John served on at SFCC. He visited me and my classroom every quarter during his last couple years at the Falls and always took the time to answer questions and share his wisdom and insights. More than a colleague, he treated me as a friend and vested in my success. I hope some of the passion and skills you brought to the classroom will continue on through your efforts in helping me be a better teacher and person.
Sincere condolences to your family, and thank you John, for your positive impacts!

It was always a pleasure working with John - years ago as freelance work along with Mary Ellen Myrene (who has also passed) and working with him on projects at SFCC. I was so great to see him at the last grad show in June -- he sounded/looked so good. He was always so positive -- I'm glad that our paths crossed.

Even though we were in different programs within the same building, John always said hello and we would chat as time would allow. He was so happy to retire from SFCC. He was missed after his retirement and I shall remember him as I saw him last. Smiling!!

John was one of the most impactful people in my career. I was a student of his at SFCC (07-09) and from the get go he introduced me into the world of design and just being as geniune as possible. After I graduated we would see each other from time to time and would do always make time to shoot the breeze. He was a great teacher, person and friend. I will always remember and cherish knowing him. Thank you for your wisdom and friendship.

I worked side by side with John for years in his design studio. Absolutely the best boss I've ever had! He made everyday a joy with his energy, talent and wit. I will remember him fondly forever.
