Welcome to the memorial page for

Lawrence "Larry" Michael Kuntz

April 28, 1932 ~ October 4, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Larry was born Lawrence Michael Kuntz on April 28, 1932 to Mike and Frieda Kuntz in Richardton, North Dakota.  He passed away peacefully at home in Spokane, WA on October 4th, 2017 surrounded by love. After the tragic death of his parents when he was 5 years old, he was lovingly raised by relatives in Richardton, N.D.  He attended school at Assumption Abbey, Gonzaga University and on to North Dakota State University, where he achieved his Pharmacy degree. Larry returned to Spokane in 1957 to work as a pharmacist at Thrifty Drug, where he met and married the love of his life, Janet (Stannard). He worked in pharmacy for 54 years, where he was loved and respected by many. His dream of owning his own drug store was eventually fulfilled when he opened North Hill Drug in the Garland district.

Larry and Janet were married for 59 years and had four children. Larry was a devoted husband, a patient and gentle father, and always involved in his children’s lives and activities. His listening, kindness, guidance and wisdom made him the solid foundation of his family across multiple generations. Larry was fun and he was funny, often teasing and making you laugh. He worked tirelessly to improve his family’s lives. Larry enjoyed music, dancing and activities with a close circle of friends and he helped neighbors any time he could.  His hobbies included reading, woodworking, fishing and hunting and growing dahlias.  Larry loved animals, often being referred to as the “Squirrel Whisperer” and he could always be counted on to have a dog biscuit or peanut in his pocket.

The story about the tragic death of his parents and his near death as a child was recently published in the book “Death Ride: A Little Boys Night of Terror,” exemplifying his resilience and courage.

It is impossible to put in words what an incredible husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend he was. He was a shining example of how to live life. His kind, gentle, loving nature will live on in our hearts forever and he will be greatly missed.

He is proceeded in death by his parents (Mike and Frieda Kuntz), in-laws
(Lloyd, Ruth and Richard Stannard) numerous aunts and uncles and survived by wife Janet, son Mike Kuntz, daughters Lori Jordan (Rick), Lisa Jackson, Kristi Kuntz, 7 grandsons and 10 great-grandsons.

Funeral service will be held Sat, Oct 14th at 10:30 at Hennessey Funeral Home. A viewing will be held on Friday, Oct 13th from 9:00 AM until 6:30 PM, with a rosary at 6:30.
