Lois Esther Westermann

Lois Esther Westermann went home to be with the Lord on June 6, 2021 at the age of 93.  She was reunited with her husband of 70 years, Waldon ‘Wes’ Westermann and her son Wesley Westermann (Sherry). Lois was born in New Salem, North Dakota to William and Caroline (Klusman) Detring and was the youngest of 3 girls. Lois is survived by four children: Brian Westermann, David Westermann, Gary Westermann (Kathryn), and Sandy Phillip (Jim). Ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren will greatly miss her. Affectionately known as ‘Mom’ or ‘Gramma’, Lois can be described as hardworking, stoic, kind, humble, faithful, stubborn, and loyal to her family.  In her final days, she was described by a nurse as a “strong woman” for having the courage to choose her destiny. Lois had several jobs prior to her favorite, as a mother and housewife.  Her first job at the bakery in New Salem was instrumental in her learning how to bake bread, kuchen, cinnamon rolls, and the best pie crust you’ll ever eat!  She was excellent at cooking, making lunches, maintaining a house, shining shoes, darning socks, and doing whatever was needed for her family.  Lois enjoyed being an active member of Lincoln Heights Community Church for many decades.   Touchmark Retirement Community was home the last 5 years of her life.  She will be remembered for her kindness to other residents and her cute little laugh.  Many of the Touchmark staff described Lois as a bright light in their day.
