Mrs. Mary Jane Becker passed away peacefully at the Royal Park Rehabilitation Center in Spokane, WA on April 13, 2019 at the age of 94. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Becker is survived by her son, Bruce Becker of Vancouver, WA and her daughter, Sandra Becker of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by four Grandchildren and two Great Grandchildren.
Mrs. Becker was born to Nicklaus and Julia Barr in Joliet, Ill. on May 12, 1924. Growing up in Phoenix, AZ, she enjoyed horseback riding in the desert. As a teenager during WWII, she worked in a bomb factory and was part of the British RAF cadet war relief effort. She was a very intelligent student and started junior college at Hanover College in Kentucky at the age of 16. Later, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Arizona State University and went on to get a Master’s degree from Stanford University. Later in life, she received another Master’s degree from WSU. She married her husband Dr. Walter Becker at the Stanford Chapel in 1952.
Raising two children in Pullman, WA, she was involved with the General Federation of Women’s Club holding a state office. She also sang in the Methodist church choir, was a substitute high school teacher and a PTA member. As a main hobby, she had a pilot’s license, was part of the women’s pilot 99ers organization and upgraded to a commercial license to fly charter flights. She also enjoyed swimming and playing golf.
She will be privately interred at the Pullman Fairmount cemetery. Please share memories and condolences on her Tribute wall.
