Tribute

Robert (Bob) Meyer passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, surrounded by family.  Bob was born in Rockwell, Iowa on April 22, 1935, to Kenneth and Catherine (McEvoy) Meyer. He was the oldest of three children, with his brother Jerry and sister Sharon.  The family eventually settled in Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho, where Bob attended high school from 1950 through 1954 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy.  Throughout high school, he was a star athlete, excelling as a quarterback and halfback, point guard, and pitcher. After graduating from the Academy in 1954, Bob attended the University of Notre Dame where he was enrolled in the College of Engineering.  He left Notre Dame after one year and joined the Navy.  From 1956 through 1958, he served as a Dental Technician Third Class, stationed in San Diego, California, and later Yokosuka, Japan.  Upon returning to Coeur D’ Alene, Bob followed in his father’s footsteps and worked as a plumber through the Local 44 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union.  Throughout his career, he worked on and was responsible for many large commercial projects throughout Spokane, Eastern Washington, and Idaho.  Bob married the love of his life, Janet (Rohrenbach) Meyer on April 11, 1964.  They had three children; Steve, Ann, and Bob. He was an active and involved father, including coaching basketball for Cataldo Catholic School.  Bob was a fifty-plus year parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he could reliably be found sitting in the back pew.  In addition to his family and faith, his other great loves were Gonzaga basketball and golf.  Until this past season he never missed a Gonzaga home game.  Perhaps not surprising given his athletic ability, Bob was a phenomenal golfer.  He competed in local senior tournaments, having won and placed on multiple occasions, including a club championship.  His preference, though, was to play socially with his many friends, where he was a fixture at the three local county courses. Bob is survived by his loving wife of fifty-three years, Janet (Rohrenbach) Meyer; his sister, Sharon (Meyer) Curtis and her husband, Randy Curtis; three children, Stephen Meyer, Ann (Meyer) Emanuels and her husband, Dean Emanuels, and Robert Meyer; seven grandchildren, Natalie McRae, Michael Meyer, Gabrielle Emanuels, Elizabeth Meyer, Sarah Meyer, Sophia Emanuels, and Catherine Emanuels; one great grandson, Aspen Sticklemeyer-McRae; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Hennessey Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 13th from Noon to 5:00 p.m.. A rosary will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 219 E Rockwood Blvd, Spokane at 7:00 p.m.  A funeral mass celebrating Bob’s life will be held Wednesday, March 14th at 11:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a reception to follow at the church hall.  The burial service will occur following the reception at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 N Wall.
