Tribute

Rodney Melburn Broxson
May 6, 1946- May 3, 2021

Rodney M. Broxson, beloved son, brother, father and friend died May 3, 2021 at 74 at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, after battling Covid.

Rod was born May 6, 1946 in Walla Walla, Washington the son of Mel and Margaret Broxson. He was the first baby born in Washington State to a GI bride during World War era. He graduated from Shadle Park High School in Spokane and entered the Navy shortly after. (USN Crash & Rescue Team 1965-1971) He served on the East Coast and spent two plus weeks in Vietnam before getting hepatitis, almost killing him, and being sent back to the States. After completing four years in the Navy he joined the Marine Reserves (USMC Pistol Team 1975-1981)

Rod leaves behind one brother David Broxson of Washington State, a sister Janis Broxson of Montana and five children: Brianna of Texas, Nickolas of Rhode Island, Matthew, Paul and Kristin of Washington State.

As a young boy, in Seattle, he built and flew fiber glass planes. After his younger brother David was born he was watching his mother change a diaper, off flew the umbilical cord. Rod looked at his mother in awe and said,” do I have a baby sister now?” (This brought many laughs over the years)

Rod was meticulous in everything he did. This showed in his carpentry finish work especially. He had two pawn shops and he completed other endeavors. In his younger years he worked the door at “Goofys” . This was the “place” to be during those hay days (Expo 70’s). He loved this job and met many celebrities. Lots of stories here!! Like the time Rod and his best friend were playing pool in the back room. All of a sudden the ceiling started to crack and fall, down came a four poster bed with a man dressed in his pj’s and sporting a stocking cap. All landed on the table they were playing on.

Rod loved: four wheelin’ in the back roads, watching the moose behind his home in the creek, women ( who lived him right back!!!), cars, guns and motorcycling. Enjoyed his morning coffee with his cronies at different coffee spots. Breakfast (his favorite meal) at Denny’s with his brother. His favorite city was Seattle. He hated tuna and noodle casserole. Loved Chinese food, his sister’s homemade Italian food.

His pride and joy was his Red Jeep which he was always working on and adding “goodies”. He liked Native American woodwork etc and often made some things himself.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has taken place by Hennessy Funeral Home and a small service will be held Monday 3pm at Holy Cross Cemetery, in Spokane. He will rest with his parents, as he wished.
