Walter “Toby” Ewart Murphy, Jr., born to Walter and Alice Murphy of Newton, MA, on July 11, 1933, passed from this life June 18, 2018 in Spokane, WA, following a brief illness. Walter was educated at Suffolk University, where he took a degree in business, and his training both there and in the US Army led him to a long career in real estate franchising for several major restaurants, including Popeye’s and Pizza Hut. He retired at the age of 67, took to the Florida sunshine and moved to Spokane in 2014. He loved going to Starbucks every day, the ocean, Tabasco, talk radio, reading the newspaper, and hot soup. Walter was always kind and helpful when it mattered most. He will be dearly missed. Walter was preceded in death by his daughter Andie (Murphy) Cunningham, his brother Peter Murphy, his long-time partner Anne Roth, his parents, and numerous other relatives. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Murphy-Rose and Christopher (Ben and Alex) Rose of Spokane, son-in-law David (Dina) Cunningham and grandchildren Tobie and Owen Cunningham of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, former spouse Ruth Murphy of Burlington, VT, sister-in-law Ginny Murphy, brother Stephen (Ann Marie) Murphy, sister Suzanne (Al) Barrett, cousin and best-friend `Billy Dunn (Joette Fabbri), and more cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, step-relatives, and friends than one can count. A private family gathering will be held a later date. Burial services will be in Scituate, MA, this fall.
